What is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. When performed with implants, it’s known as a breast augmentation-lift, but a breast lift can be performed on its own if you’re happy with your current breast size and just wish to improve the shape and/or perkiness of your breasts. Dr. Michael Vennemeyer will use one of many breast lift techniques during surgery depending on your personal goals.
Reasons to Get a Breast Lift
Many women are frustrated with the change in their breast shape over time, either due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, massive weight loss, or even genetics. A breast lift will remove extra skin and elevate the nipples to create a more youthful curve, and your breasts will be about the same size after the procedure. Depending on the results you’re looking for, a breast lift may be enough to satisfy your goals — but it may have to be combined with a breast augmentation if you’re looking to add more fullness or volume to your breasts.
Who is a Candidate for a Breast Lift?
Whether you want enhanced fullness or a larger cup size will determine if a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a combination of both is right for you. When you come to Vennemeyer Plastic Surgery for your consultation, we’ll discuss all this and more to ensure you’re a candidate. Candidates for only a breast lift tend to be women who are satisfied with the size of their breasts but not the shape or sagginess. For safety reasons, a BMI of 30 or less is required to perform any plastic surgery procedure at Vennemeyer Plastic Surgery.
Surgery Process
Once we determine if you’re a candidate, it’s time to schedule your surgery! A breast lift is an outpatient surgery performed under general anesthesia, and it is accomplished based on the goals outlined and using the technique Dr. Vennemeyer determined would best suit your goals during your consultation. On the day of your surgery, we ask that someone drive you to and from our facility, as you will be drowsy from medications after the procedure.
Recovery
You’ll be fitted with a special post-op recovery bra after surgery, which you’ll wear around the clock for the first few weeks, and we also ask that you avoid driving for a minimum of 72 hours. You should be able to go back to light activities when you get home from your surgery, but we ask that you don’t go back to the gym for at least 3 weeks, and avoid any high impact activities or exercises for at least 6 weeks following your procedure.
Types of Breast Lifts
There are several techniques that can be used to perform a breast lift. The first is a donut lift (peri-areolar), where a ring of skin is removed from the areola, which works well for small amounts of lift. For moderate lift, the lollipop lift, where there is a ring around the areola and then a vertical incision underneath, may be preferable; for severe lift, the inverted T or anchor-shaped incision may be more appropriate.
The type of breast lift Dr. Vennemeyer will perform will depend on your degree of sagginess and your expectations, including whether or not the procedure is being combined with a breast augmentation.
